IPL Aftercare Instructions

A mild irritation comparable to a sunburn is to be expected. Generally, this sensation lasts 1 – 2 hours post treatment, but can persist for up to 24 hours – varying person to person. Mild swelling, tenderness, and/or redness may accompany this. To help alleviate this, you may apply ice packs or gel packs (do not apply direct ice) to the treated area in 10 – 15 minute intervals every hour for four hours as needed and a topical anti-inflammatory may be used to soothe redness and tenderness. An oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, may be taken to reduce discomfort. Use according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In rare cases, prolonged redness or blistering may occur. If this happens, please contact us. An antibiotic ointment may be applied to the affected area(s) twice daily until healed. Any pigmented lesions may initially look raised and/or darker with a reddened perimeter, this is normal. Over the next 24 – 48 hours, they will continue to darken. These spots may turn dark brown or black and will begin to flake off within 7 – 10 days. Rarely, they may progress to a scab or crusting phase – if this happens, please call us. Veins or vascular lesions may undergo immediate graying/blanching (turning white) or may exhibit a slight purple to red coloring. If the treated area develops crusting or a scab it should start to flake off within 7 – 14 days. The treated vessels are expected to fade partially or fully within that timeframe.

Cleansing

Shower as normal. Be advised that treated areas may be sensitive to temperature. Avoid soaking/submersion in hot tubs of water, scrubbing/use of exfoliants, brushes, or loofah sponges until the treatment area has returned to its pre-treatment condition.

Preventative Care

Do not pick, scratch at, or remove any scabs. It is essential to allow them to flake off on their own to prevent scarring or discoloration. Lesions typically heal within 7 – 10 days. Following healing, these areas should continue to fade over the next 6 – 8 weeks.

Things to Avoid

After your treatment, you are required to refrain from the following:
Exercise/Perspiration
For at least 3 days post treatment. Sweat contains bacteria. Any excessive perspiration could pose the risk of infection.

Submersion/Heat
I.e. pools, hot tubs, bath tubs, the ocean, saunas, etc. for at least 5 days post treatment.

Sun Exposure/Tanning Beds
Until the skin has returned to normal. Always wear a topical sun protectant of at least SPF 30.

Exfoliation
Avoid exfoliants, scrubbing, or using abrasive loofahs/sponges on the treated area(s).

Hair Removal
Avoid shaving the area for at least 48 hours after treatment.

Picking or Scratching
This can cause scarring, discoloration, and pose risk for infection.

Cosmetics
I.e. scented lotions, makeup, tanning products, etc.

Using Blood Thinners
Including, but not limited to ibuprofen, alcohol, aspirin, and caffeine for at least 5 days post treatment.

Frequency of Treatment
Repeat treatment to veins may be done every 7 – 14 days or once the skin has fully recovered.
Please be advised that multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired result.
